NATO have to prepare for an all-out war with Russia as President Vladimir Putin is anticipated to “lash out” subsequent Ukraine’s striking recapture of Russian-occupied territory that reversed close to 6 months of Russian gains, a former NATO deputy commander told Fox News.

Russian forces on Tuesday withdrew from locations in the Luhansk region, marking the most recent victory for Ukraine as its troopers press eastward, reclaiming far more than 2,000 square miles of territory in what some think could be a important turning point in the war.

“What we would all like Russia to pack up, go house and ignore about it, but that will not come about,” Shirreff told Fox Information anchor Martha MacCallum. “We have to think that Putin could conveniently escalate in some other means. I’m sure that Russia will lash out…the worst circumstance of class is if Russia decides to go severe escalation. That most likely delivers in the threat of nuclear weaponry.”

Shirreff said NATO should get ready for the “worst circumstance” in the party that Putin resorts to nuclear war. The Russian strongman has repeatedly prompt that Western interference in his invasion of Ukraine could direct him to use nuclear weapons. U.S. officials have reported that Putin would only resort to nuclear war if he perceives an existential menace to Russia. Nonetheless, with Ukraine’s the latest victories on the battlefield, he may perhaps come to feel pushed into a corner, Shirreff spelled out.
